Council Tax Reduction Scheme

A Council Tax Reduction Scheme is there to help those on low incomes towards the cost of their Council Tax. If you are already receiving help towards your Council Tax, this will be shown on your bill as Council Tax Support. The Council Tax Reduction Scheme is independent of other discounts, exemptions and relief, which you may also be able to apply for. Anyone with a low income may apply for Council Tax Reduction. The amount of Council Tax reduction you can receive depends on your family circumstances, income, capital and savings.

Lasting Power of Attorney

A lasting power of attorney (LPA) gives someone the authority to make decisions on your behalf when you no longer have the mental capacity to make decisions for yourself. You must make an LPA while you still have mental capacity, but the LPA does not come into effect until you are judged to lack mental capacity. You should make a lasting power of attorney if you have been diagnosed with, or think you might develop, an illness which might prevent you from making decisions for yourself at some time in the future.

The kinds of illness which might prevent you from making decisions for yourself include:

  • Dementia
  • Mental health problems
  • Brain injury
  • Alcohol or drug misuse
  • The side effects of medical treatment
  • Any other illness or disability

To make an LPA You will need to fill in a form.

Different types of lasting power of attorney

There are 2 types of LPA:

  • Property and financial affairs LPA
  • Personal welfare LPA

Depending on your situation you can make an LPA for either type or both. You don’t have to make both types at the same time.

Playlist for Life

Playlist for Life is a dementia and music charity which provides free resources to help people who are living with dementia – with the assistance of family and friends who care for them – to create a personal playlist of music which is special to them.  There is lots of information about it on their website, which also includes downloadable resources. It demonstrates how compiling a personal playlist of music can have a really positive, therapeutic influence on people who are living with dementia.

Accessible Resources: information in different formats

Our nationally produced resources are available in a range of formats, including translations into different languages, Easy Read, British Sign Language, audio versions and online videos. Whilst these aren’t specifically linked to services in Derbyshire, they’re a great resource that can be used to help to provide the right services across more communities and for people living in the county. We are keen to ensure anyone affected by Dementia is able to seek out the right information and support where needed.
